The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, often called the 'Coca-Cola Route' because it was the first to be equipped with hut accommodations. This five-day itinerary is popular with first-time Kilimanjaro climbers and those who prefer sleeping in huts rather than tents.
The route passes through five climate zones, from tropical rainforest to the arctic summit zone. While it is considered the easiest route, the five-day version offers less time for acclimatization, so a high level of fitness is recommended. The huts provide basic but comfortable accommodation with bunk beds and shared dining facilities.

📅 Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Marangu Gate (1879m) and begin trekking through rainforest to Mandara Hut (2700m). The trail passes through dense forest home to colobus monkeys and diverse birdlife.
Ascend through the moorland zone to Horombo Hut (3720m). The vegetation changes from forest to heath and moorland with giant lobelias and groundsels.
Ascend through the alpine desert zone to Kibo Hut (4700m). The landscape becomes increasingly barren and lunar-like. Rest and hydrate before the summit attempt.
Midnight start for the summit attempt via Gillman's Point (5681m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Descend to Horombo Hut (3720m) for overnight.
Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate (1879m). Receive your climbing certificate and transfer to your hotel or airport.
