The seven-day Machame Route is the extended version of the popular Whiskey Route, offering an extra day for acclimatization and significantly higher summit success rates. This additional day allows you to explore more of Kilimanjaro's diverse ecosystems at a more relaxed pace, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and increasing your chances of reaching the summit.
The route takes you through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone. Highlights include crossing the dramatic Barranco Wall, camping on the stunning Shira Plateau, and summiting Uhuru Peak at sunrise. With experienced guides and carefully planned acclimatization, this trek offers the best balance of challenge and success probability.
Tour Highlights
📅 Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your lead guide for a briefing on the trek ahead.
Drive to Machame Gate (1790m) and begin your trek through lush rainforest. Ascend through dense vegetation to Machame Camp (3010m).
Continue ascending through the moorland zone. Reach Shira Camp (3845m) on the Shira Plateau.
Ascend to Lava Tower (4630m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3960m) for excellent acclimatization.
Cross the Barranco Wall and trek to Karanga Camp (4000m) for an extra acclimatization day.
Trek to Barafu Camp (4640m) and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Midnight start for the summit attempt. Reach Uhuru Peak (5895m) at sunrise. Descend to Mweka Camp (3100m).
Descend to Mweka Gate (1630m) and transfer to hotel. Certificate ceremony and departure.
