📋 Tour Overview
The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. This remote and less-traveled route offers a wilderness experience with fewer crowds and unique wildlife encounters, including the possibility of seeing elephants, buffalo, and other animals in the lower forest zones.
The route passes through diverse ecosystems, from tropical rainforest to alpine desert, and offers stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. The northern approach receives less rainfall, making it a good choice during the rainy season. With experienced guides and carefully planned acclimatization, this route provides an excellent alternative to the more popular southern routes.
Tour Highlights
📅 Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Nalemoru Gate (2000m) on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. Trek through rainforest to First Cave Camp (2650m). Watch for colobus monkeys and birdlife.
Ascend through moorland to Kikelewa Camp (3600m). The trail offers stunning views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding landscape.
Trek to Mawenzi Tarn (4330m) beneath the dramatic Mawenzi Peak. This is a challenging day with steep ascent and stunning scenery.
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks to reach Kibo Hut (4700m). Rest and hydrate before the summit attempt.
Midnight start for the summit attempt via Gillman's Point to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Descend to Horombo Hut (3720m).
Descend to Marangu Gate on the southern side. Certificate ceremony and transfer to hotel or airport.
